Are you a fan of action-packed westerns featuring cowboys, shoot-outs, and Mexican standoffs? If the answer is yes, grab a copy of James Hitt's Storm Riders. Set in the wild frontier of Llano Estacado during the years around the American Civil War, the book follows an unnamed escaped slave from Louisiana who recounts the tale of Waco Joseph Callahan, a mixed-race man who made a name for himself as the Comanche Kid. Raised by a rancher called the Captain, Waco faced discrimination from his older brothers since childhood due to the native blood he inherited from his mother. After his father passes away, Waco and a rag-tag group of escaped slaves and Comanches must flee his brother Flynn and his thugs, who are determined to kill them all. Will Waco survive a final confrontation with his brother? Can he protect his loved ones?

James Hitt incorporates some real-life historical personalities and incidents that add to the authenticity of the narrative, making the stakes feel all the more real. Storm Riders is a full-on thrill ride you don't want to put down. Hitt perfectly captures the wild west setting, and the way the characters talk and interact brings a lived-in feel to the world. You almost find yourself picturing the plains and harsh terrain of the American midwest of the late 19th century. The characters are well-developed and blend into the story. Waco is someone you can't help rooting for. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who loves to read westerns or historical fiction.
