Shipping heiress Miranda Merrick is determined to discover the truth behind the sabotage of her father’s ships and resist his attempts to coax her into a financially advantageous marriage. A visit to her uncle on board one of their cargo ships, the Elle Merrick, leads to an ill-timed nap and, when Miranda wakes up, she finds she’s accidentally stowed away on a trip to Australia. Her uncle is nowhere to be found, replaced by a handsome new captain and an unfamiliar crew. And one of them is a saboteur. Hiding her real identity, Miranda goes undercover as a cook and maid, all the while searching for the person trying to harm the ship. Danger is everywhere, however. Someone knows who Miranda is and what she’s doing, and if that wasn’t distracting enough, she finds herself falling for the dashing young captain who is every bit as suspicious of her as she is of him.

Stowaway by Darcy Flynn is a contemporary swashbuckling romance on the high seas. Flynn’s storytelling expertise shows itself in this fun book set aboard a modern day cargo ship. The plot and characters are both well developed. Miranda is clever and spirited but vulnerable. Her captain beau is nicely done too. They feel like real people, with flaws and personality. Flynn keeps readers guessing about the identity of the saboteur and she creates an atmosphere of suspense that helps set the tone. If you like ocean-going romances laced with intrigue and suspense, then you won’t want to miss this one.
