Surviving Poverty by Philip van Heusen is a Christian book that deals with the subject of poverty. The author defines the term and conveys stories and anecdotes to illustrate the label and steps a reader may take to rise out of the designation. Free resources and links are provided, and books are suggested to help readers alter their situation and further their knowledge.

Surviving Poverty encourages an alteration in your mindset to battle against the stereotypes placed on certain classes by yourself and others. Readers will enjoy the scripture the author uses to confirm his points, as he explains certain socio-economic situations and highlights them with true stories. The book encourages everyone who needs it to take the first step to improve their circumstances. The author has degrees in psychology, counseling, and religion, and his experience in counseling individuals with low incomes seems to have provided him with the understanding he needs to approach his readers about a sensitive subject.

Philip van Heusen has written a wonderful book that can be used to help people who are struggling with societal or self-imposed burdens as they walk through life. Surviving Poverty could be read by individuals who were at or below the nation’s poverty level, but it would also be a great book to help more economically advantaged people appreciate their lifestyle and raise awareness about those who are not as fortunate. This book would be a gem on a church or public library’s shelf, as it would be available to people who may need the encouragement and motivation to follow the words of Christian scripture into a more fulfilling life.
