Take This Journey With Me; Poems from the Laboratory of John Turner is an uplifting collection of inspirational poems all bound together into one astounding book. The book begins with a bottle floating in from the sea where the reader gets a lovely message from that bottle; “Take This Journey With Me.” The title is very appropriate as each poem is really a journey into the human soul and beyond. Turner creates a unique spin on his poem called “The Narrow Road,” which is comparable to Robert Frost’s poem called “The Road Not Taken,” however, Turner weaves in a new perspective on where the narrower path leads. He is able to elaborate on an existing and popular poem, but make it his own with his delicate and intriguing words. The poem called “Upon My Garden” truly brings a scenic garden to life entwining nurture and nature throughout it. There are numerous poems to name, but the ones that I adored most were related to the delicate transformation of a beautiful butterfly, poems about our conflictions and flaws, about being a human being, holding another person’s hand, and how the wind can bring us so much joy and laughter.

I knew immediately from viewing the cover and title of this book that it was going to be a special collection of short poems that I wouldn’t want to put down. The cover is gorgeously illustrated with a sunset rising over the most astonishing scenery. And the title truly says it all because it really is a journey and an exploration of feelings, emotions and images that reminds me of a series of Thomas Kinkade paintings. Each chapter is short and flows to the next chapter easily with simple wording that anyone can comprehend. The poems each have their own unique rhyme and rhythm to them that flow like a sweet lullaby. The short poems truly touched my soul and through John Turner’s wording, I was captivated and eager to keep reading to the next chapter. I am blown away that such a great writer can touch someone’s soul and bring so much passion to a person’s life through writing words onto a page. Turner’s poems are each a masterpiece to be treasured and savored! He states in one of his writings that “One of these days, I am going to make a difference”, well John Turner, you truly have made a difference with this wonderful and rare glimpse into such unique and exquisitely written poetry! Turner touches the human soul, give us hope and inspiration, and just turns a gloomy day into a bright day for us readers. I thoroughly enjoyed each poem and I am going to purchase this special collection of poems for my mother, who has a birthday coming up soon. Well done Mr. Turner!

Poet/author John Turner has written the poems in "Take This Journey With Me" as a gift that comes from his ability to express and communicate thoughts and feelings with the reader. Poet Turner opens with an introductory poem about a letter in a bottle washed up from the ocean that tells the reader "don't let go of my hand" for answers to questions will follow. And in single-space poems that are not longer than a page and a half, John Turner creates poems with a pleasing cadence that cover a variety of emotions from sadness at the death of a runaway to enjoying the pleasantness of a girl who works the cash register at a convenience store. In the poem entitled 'An Empty Desk', the demise of a well-run business is covered while in the poem 'Like a Glass of Red Wine', similes tell of an individual who is well-loved. Poet/Author Turner intends his words to "strengthen the hearts of many" as he discusses violence, the six o'clock news and the power of music to uplift. He writes that "one of these days I'm going to make a difference" and readers of this poetry volume will understand that he's done just that.

"Take This Journey With Me" has some excellent poems that cover issues from tragedy to glorious love with expertly created meters and rhymes. Any one of these poems can be set to music in an instant. Turner's use of repetition in several of his poems like "I am flawed, I am flawed, I am flawed" will recall the brilliance of Dylan Thomas. The poem on page 129 says it all and will connect hearts everywhere:

"The thought behind poetry as it leaves the mind of the poet
And finds its way to printed page for the enjoyment of everyone
Is to connect the hearts of many people, even if they may not know it..."

"Take This Journey With Me" is a collection of poems and other writings from the laboratory of John Turner, taking you on a journey from the past to the present and to the future. The very first poem is 'Please, Take This Journey With Me,' inviting the reader to “travel with him, And even now as we travel together, we’ll see miracles unheard of As we once again yearn to learn to unravel all of life’s mysteries.” On this journey there are around one hundred poems about every walk of life. And just to name a few: 'Life is an open book,' 'Blue jays and Red cardinals,' 'I am a human being,' 'I don’t really have the answer, 'The only thing that matters,' 'Please, please, please,' 'Mom, bikes, biscuits and bruises' and 'Last stop, Eternalville.'

John Turner is a gifted writer and uses his abilities to communicate with words to enlighten readers with wonderful written expressions in his book “Take This Journey With Me.” While reading his poems, I found I can relate to some things he is talking about, and I can also use my imagination and discover more than just what is written. Mr. Turner expresses himself in such a way that his poems are easily read and understood. They help you to relax and take a look at another important time in your life. I especially enjoyed reading 'Mom, bike biscuits and bruises' as the author went back to the time he was young and living at home, the fun things he did as a kid, meal times and smelling his mom's cooking. It took me back to my own childhood, the memories of my parents, our home, my brothers and sisters and all of the fun we had growing up. Cherished memories. This is a wonderful book to take you away to another level of reading, to places you may not think about otherwise. I encourage you to grab a copy, read and enjoy.

John Turner has compiled a collection of poems in his book, "Take This Journey With Me: poems from the laboratory of John Turner." Turner's poems focus on nature, relationships, and just everyday thoughts and concepts. Each poem is written in a personal, intimate tone that will pull the reader into the words and make them really think about his or her own personal life. While there are several that focus on nature, there are also numerous poems on love, goodbyes, memories and relationships. Each poem paints a vivid picture and provides words to meditate on.

While each poem is written in a style and with words that are easily followed and understood, I found myself going back and rereading several lines just so that I could really grasp what was being said as each line is filled with so much detail and meaning. The adjectives used and the imagery applied throughout create very vivid pictures and are very thought-provoking. One of my favorite pieces in this collection is 'Upon My Garden.' This piece of art is a vivid and heartfelt description of working in a garden plot and cultivating the ground and seeds ultimately reaping what is sown. This is a great description of the physical labor that goes into gardening and the care that must continue throughout the whole process and yet at the same time this piece is also an analogy of love and caring for other areas of our lives as "weeds" can try to creep in and take over.
