The Abyss of St. Marie by Jason Hubbard follows Tyler Stanford, a human boy with an amazing aptitude for magic. Tyler always dreamed of escaping his tiny little world to go off to the magic academy. He did, but in the process, he lost his elven friend Lon due to retaliation by other elves who had gained their freedom. Now 25 years later, tensions still run high between humans and elves but something much worse is headed their way. Tyler is sent on a mission with an elf named Gos to kill the indestructible.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Abyss of St. Marie by Jason Hubbard, especially in the way it touched on several real issues, even though it is set in a fantasy world. The topics of segregation and discrimination can be distasteful to some people, but I enjoy books that touch on these subjects as they allow the reader time to reflect on human nature less directly. The beginning of the book made a strong impression and helped to build expectations of the events that would follow. Hubbard’s writing style helped set the tone for the story perfectly, especially considering the period in which it was set. Although we never lingered too long in the past, Hubbard gave us just enough information to settle into this world comfortably. The characters were well-written and I enjoyed the various interactions between elves and humans, with Tyler being the main focal point of these. This is a worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys similar books.
