The Bolivian Incident is a work of fiction in the science fiction subgenre and serves as the second installment in the Hollis Whittaker series. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by CB Shanahan. The book follows young Hollis Whittaker who used a mysterious medallion and now has a telepathic link to an alien with abilities far in advance of what humans exhibit. As Hollis and his friends attempt to flee the US into Central America, Hollis’ parents go missing and another wielder of a medallion warns Hollis of the unforeseen effects of using his strange powers.

It’s easy to assume that books with pre-teen protagonists are aimed at readers in the same age range, but to dismiss this book on that basis would be a serious mistake as the action, ideas, and humor of the story will appeal to readers of all ages. CB Shanahan does not waste a moment of the reader's time in building on the foundations set down in the previous novel, finding an exciting and engaging new direction in which to push young hero Hollis for this unmissable sequel. The world-building in this series is top-rate, and the addition of a new character with the same medallion as Hollis but with different powers throws open the possibilities for the rest of the series. The Bolivian Incident is an exciting adventure that uses its science fiction lens to tell a dynamic story and also make several choice observations about the world.
