The Clandestine Life of Paintings in Poems by Robin Gabbert shares a stunning and poignant collection of poems based on different forms of art. This creative work reflects on famous works of art, photographs, culture, and art from new artists. The poems and artwork are diverse and at times showcase beauty and mystery while others are haunting or thought-provoking. Gabbert’s poems convey curiosity as well as a sincere interest in and compassion for humanity. The art in this collection is vibrant and stunning as well as quiet and understated. These captivating poems are written from different perspectives, as the art depicted is seen from the point of view of the subject within the painting or with Gabbert offering observations and inquiries about the work.

Robin Gabbert’s The Clandestine Life of Paintings in Poems shares a compelling read of poetry inspired by art. I really enjoyed how these poems encourage contemplation. After reading the rich and descriptive poems, I was often led to reconsider the artwork and discovered details that I had not seen before. I also appreciated how Gabbert shared personal insights in a way that lets the reader develop their own interpretation of the works presented. In “Maria of the Cala Lilies,” readers are invited to consider the source of Maria’s serenity and composure. “Modern Renaissance Gal” prompts readers to consider how the woman in the painting is portrayed as well as how people who appear different are treated in the world. This a highly recommended read.
