Everyone knows a group of cattle is referred to as a herd. However, do you know what the collective nouns referring to African animals are? Unfortunately, most do not, and Miriam Monette provided a children’s book to solve that issue. The Crazy Collective Nouns Book: African Animals will entertain and inform children. Using rhyme, Miriam shares the collective nouns for various African animals. For example, a group of baboons is called a troop. Likewise, when people think of hyenas, they usually think of the species named laughing hyenas. Therefore, a group of hyenas is appropriately called a cackle. The beautiful stripes of zebras can dazzle the eye as they travel across the savannas. No wonder the collective noun for them is dazzle. These and many other fascinating facts make this little book a gem for children. Learn all about collective nouns with your child.

Who said English lessons had to be boring? Not Miriam Monette, who uses rhymes to teach the various collective nouns for African animals. The rhyming gives a smooth flow to the words and Aye Horrocks drew colorful and exciting illustrations. At the end of the book, Miriam includes additional facts about the various animals. For instance, she shares how the gnus were named and that a rhino’s horn is made of the same substance as our fingernails. Miriam knows how to help children remember what they read. She had Aye draw wacky illustrations for each fact that will stick in the child’s memory. Children who read this book will be entertained and educated. They may not even realize they are being educated. Reading The Crazy Collective Nouns Book: African Animals is so much fun that children will want more like it.
