Thom Mollohan presents a novel idea for sharing the gospel in The Fairy Tale Parables. Thom believes in the Word of God but has chosen to share biblical truth through the use of fairy tales. Fairy tales retold in this book include The Gingerbread Man (my favorite from this book), Snow White, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Sleeping Beauty, The Three Little Pigs, and others. Thom retells them in such a way as to highlight principles for living a Christian life. Some principles discussed include living in the Vine, depending on His righteousness, trusting in God, His goodness and love, and sharing God’s blessings. Once you have read this book, you will never look at fairy tales the same way. Reading this book to and with your children opens the door for many discussions about living a Christian life. This book is a great resource for building Christian character in your children.

Too often, we read a fairy tale and then wonder how it connects to real life. For example, how does a tailor killing giants relate to modern life? Can there be more to fairy tales than happy endings? Thom Mollohan wrote The Fairy Tale Parables with something more than just a nice story in mind. He desired to make fairy tales relevant to modern life. He wants the time spent reading fairy tales to promote Christian growth. I completely enjoyed reading his take on the various fairy tales and how to use them to encourage children to follow Christ. Thom is a master storyteller. He adjusts the fairy tales to make them relevant to life. I have found illustrations for sermons in many strange places. Still, in my forty-plus years of pulpit ministry, I never considered using illustrations from fairy tales. That oversight will soon be rectified.
