In The Fifth City (Arcera Trilogy, Book 2) by Liz Delton, Rider Sylvia Thorne decides to leave Meadowcity and head to Lightcity to find some way to turn the war around. Meeting Neve turns her journey to Seascape, where she meets the formidable Lady Naomi Blackwater. The strange city is reluctant to help, but Lady Blackwater offers Sylvia a chance to prove herself in the Trials, which will push Sylvia’s physical and mental limits to breaking point. With each task she learns more about Seascape’s vast technologies and discovers she is good at manipulating them. But soon she will learn about their darkest secret, the reason that kept them apart for a thousand years.

The protagonist, Sylvia, amazes me once again with her perseverance and bravery. Also, Neve and Lady Naomi Blackwater are great additions to the cast. I love the way the plot developed – kudos to Delton. Personally I find the plot has a bit more depth than the first book. Delton’s narrative is as engaging as ever and I was able to immerse myself in the story, perhaps even more than I did in Book 1. As a second installment of the series, The Fifth City is not quite a standalone. It will definitely benefit readers to read its predecessor, Meadowcity, in order to familiarize themselves with the world building, the characters, and the continuation of the plot in Book 2. All in all, this is another solid installment from Delton and I’m very intrigued to see how the story continues in Book 3.
