The Game Café: Stories of New York City in Covid Time is a collection of nine short stories by Eleanor Lerman. As the title suggests, the stories are about individuals living in New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through her stories, we are invited into the lives of a diverse group of characters greatly affected by the restrictions during the pandemic. Murmansk is about an elderly professor who finds himself communicating through his late brother’s ham radio with a man in Russia. The Game Café follows Laura as she interacts with strangers by playing board games. Coming from different backgrounds, the characters in these stories show resilience as they cope with the isolation of life in a modern-day urban setting.

Eleanor Lerman’s The Game Café is an insightful collection of stories that captures the spirit of New York City during the pandemic. It delves into the effects of isolation and highlights the importance of social interaction as social distancing guidelines are being imposed in an urban setting. The theme is timely and relevant as people’s lives are still affected by the effects of the unprecedented health crisis. This collection stands out because through the lens of different characters we can explore the diverse experiences and the essence of life in New York City at the height of the pandemic.
