The Garden Plot Diaries by Endy Wright is a fascinating anthology. Although readers never become privy to the name of the diary owner, we are all captivated by him due to his wit and fun-loving personality. A retired old war vet and avid gardener living in Monadnock, New Hampshire, his diary chronicles several peculiar events that occurred in his community. The first entry describes the all-out war between the local Garden Society and the Friends of the Library in Monadnock (FLIM). After this, we are treated to an account that culminates in the old war vet defending his friend Ivendricus Pourdry in court. The third story involves zany adventures resulting from eating cheese infused with mushrooms. Finally, there is the retelling of a pumpkin-related suspenseful horror story.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Garden Plot Diaries by Endy Wright. All the characters were well fleshed out. I was heavily invested in what was happening to Ivendricus in The Trash police story. The diary owner portrays the good, the bad, and the ugly of the people in his community in such a way that I couldn’t help but laugh most of the time. I loved the subject matter of the stories. Each entry was well-paced, and there was always an interesting plot twist. A recurring and thought-provoking theme was the notion of a gardener being the god of his garden. There is a privilege and a responsibility that comes with not just being a gardener, but a caretaker and a producer. I highly recommend this collection to everyone.
