I loved this book. Can't wait until I have grandchildren so I can read this story again and again.

"The Golden Rule" is the eighth book in the author's series of award-winning socio-educational books for early elementary children. Written in delightful verse, with a familiar cast of rainbow characters from previous beloved stories, "The Golden Rule" takes Robert and Kait on an important quest for a mysterious golden ruler mentioned by their Mom. What they discover is amazing and life changing, in fact the Golden Rule, as they uncovered its essence, is a way of opening your life to all that it can be. For in fact, they were not to find a golden ruler, but instead the Golden Rule, which is simply stated: "Treat others the way you'd like to be treated." The children find that this means "It's a rule that you live by, to give and to share, a way to treat others to show that you care." What this rule actually means in daily living is described in kid friendly terms. You might offer to share your toys or books or other reading devices with kids who don't have them. Don't try to steal someone else's work, or plagiarize. When someone bullies or tries to hurt you, try to empathize instead of fighting back. But tell him it is not nice to hurt others and ask an adult for help too. The concept of sharing is expanded to the marvelous idea of "pay it forward," something children are eager to participate with. "The Golden Rule" is delightfully creative, like the author's other books. Also a familiar feature is the placement of embedded book covers of the author's previous popular books, which are referred to in the Author's Special Notes section at the end. As in previous publications, 50 % of the profits of "The Golden Rule" goes to the CureJM Foundation to help find a cure for Juvenile Myositis, an incurable children's disease. Included in the "classroom of characters' by the illustrator Kalpart is the little girl named Addie, from CureJM. "The Golden Rule" is a five star classic with some nice new touches. Children in early elementary classes will grow towards its strong, embracing visionary message.

The Golden Rule, by Sherrill S. Cannon, is a fantastic book which teaches and inspires youngsters to be kind. Penned in rhyme, with a lyrical cadence, this book is well written and has a powerful message that will ring true with kids on many levels. The Golden Rule is fun to read and is sure to become a favorite with parents, teachers, caregivers and children.

Young readers get ready! Author Sherrill Cannon has penned another fun, engaging book that not only entertains but teaches a very important lesson too.
As our story opens, we meet Robert and Kait, siblings who are on a mission:
“We need to start looking for something that’s great,”
Said Robert, while talking to his sister, Kait.
“For there is a ruler Mom says is quite old
It must be important – it’s made out of gold!”
Right away, parents will catch on to the wordplay that is going on, but it takes Robert and Kait (and likely our young readers) a bit longer to figure out just what the Golden Rule is.
Our two protagonists decide that if the ‘ruler’ is made out of gold, it must be valuable.Perhaps they could sell it and make some money. Robert and Kait head to their school, for where else would a ‘ruler’ be kept? They look
everywhere – under chairs, on the desks – but the only ruler they find is an old, plastic ruler. Ewwww...
Perplexed at their inability to find the ruler, Kait asks Robert if perhaps they’re looking for the wrong type of ruler. Robert thinks for a minute and then a light bulb goes off (yup, we see a light bulb over his head) and he says,
“It’s not a ruler...It’s a rule, instead!”
That’s why we can’t find it – it’s not just at school.
It’s not a school ruler, or a measuring tool...
It’s a rule that you live by, to give and to share,
A way to treat others to show that you care.”
The two children are thrilled that they’ve figured out what the golden rule is and now it’s time to share with others just what it means. The bulk of The Golden Rule is devoted to Kait and Robert looking into how this important rule can, and should, be applied to everyday experiences. From bullying to ‘Paying It Forward,’ readers will learn about numerous situations where being kind and treating others the way you want to be treated, is THE BEST way to live your life.
This is the fourth book by Sherrill Cannon that Feathered Quill has reviewed (and the second by this reviewer), and like the others, Manner-Man, My Fingerpaint Masterpiece and Mice & Spiders & Webs...Oh My!, this one is a winner. Ms. Cannon is a master at writing playful rhymes that impart important lessons, and her use of wordplay (see also: Mice & Spiders & Webs…Oh My!) is clever and quite funny. The rhyming flows nicely while conveying an important lesson, and that’s not easy to do! Add in the always entertaining illustrations by Kalpart, and you have another 5-Star children’s book by Ms. Cannon!

The Golden Rule is a powerful piece of children's literature that asks each child to treat others how they would want to be treated themselves. Sherrill S. Cannon does it yet again with another meaningful children's book written with a touch of genius! This book is written in a fun rhyming manner which immediately engages the children's attention. Then it holds their attention because it is a real life lesson that they can apply to their own lives. Are they being bullied or do they need to be a nicer friend to others? It teaches about sharing and being a good friend to others. I recommend this book for pre-k all the way on up through elementary school ages. I have my own in-home daycare business and was having a rough week with the children. They were fighting and not getting along last week very well. I was at my wits end and then this little gem arrived in the mail. It was JUST what we all needed. I opened it up immediately and we all sat down in a circle to read it. The children were glued to the brightly illustrated pages and it got them thinking and talking. We had a great discussion about sharing, listening and being kind to one another. It was so good, that in fact, we read it for a second time! The children fell silent and clung onto each word. After the second time I read it in a row, the children got up, proceeded to pick up the toys (without complaining) and the rest of the day were very kind to each other. I am very impressed with this book and plan to read it each week to the children because it really works and the children love it. This book is worth the small investment and is a powerful teaching tool that children will love. Thank you Sherrill for understanding children so well and knowing just how to word your books to their level of understanding. It is not over their heads at all and it is something they were excited to tell their parents about. Of course, I had parents asking where they can buy Sherrill's books now! I read a ton of young children's books and none as are good as hers. I look forward to many more of her awesome children's books with great anticipation. The children give it 100 thumbs up!!! And I give it 100 Stars!
