The dialogue itself captures a fantastic spirit of the Old West whilst also keeping the gags modern and relevant for contemporary readers, and I enjoyed the turns of phrase and misunderstandings that lead to some really corking exchanges between characters. I also really enjoyed the diversity of people portrayed in the work, shattering Hollywood-esque ideas of the Old West in favor of a more varied and interesting ensemble. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Good, The Bad And The Haddock for fans of the existing series and those seeking a fun and fast-paced historical humor read.

The Good, The Bad and the Haddock is an incredible yarn. Everything that happens on these pages is an adventure. Ivor Dogsbreath is just one of the characters with whom you will have a lot of fun. There are so many of them, to the point that one might think this is not just the story of Ivor Dogsbreath but of the entire Wild West town. Such a quantity of characters would have been unmanageable for a less skilled writer than Keven Shevels. Instead, the author describes each of them as they deserve and also writes a compelling and entertaining novel. What can be better than this? I recommend it to those who enjoy reading stories set in the Wild West.

In The Good, The Bad And The Haddock by Keven Shevels, Ivor Dogsbreath of Slagbottom, England, is now in the American Wild West, gets thumb-hurt, and wants to leave town but cannot afford it, so he picks up a shovel to move horse poop before unintentionally becoming a bonafide sharpshooter. As a result, Dogsbreath, the gunfighter who has never fired a gun, is given his own and is made a deputy. This does not sit well with the infamous Rattlesnake Cyril, who enjoys killing other people's brothers and fathers. Crime is high with homesteads being forcefully sold at under-market value and ranch hands like poor old Frosty Nuts being shot dead, all at Rattlesnake Cyril's hand or command. When Dogsbreath becomes the default law enforcer, he does what any self-respecting man would do: he steals a horse, severely injures himself, and recuperates with a band of strangers. And this is all before the rise of the Hole in the Jeans Gang, who are not pleased about being accused of a stagecoach heist. Oh, and there's also a stagecoach heist.

Keven Shevels keeps the comedy coming in The Good, The Bad And The Haddock, the fourth book in The Dogsbreath Histories, preceded by book one, The Haddock Flies at Midnight, book two, A Song of Ice and Haddock, and book three, The Maltese Haddock. Shevel writes stories that are comedic and this is no exception. His play on names is always good but the incorporation of famous cowboy folk in the old American West and recreating those names as figures in the storyline is extra fun. Dot Holiday, Milly the Kid, and Beth Cassidy are among the best, although Jesse James is excellent too...but he's not a made-up name. So, there's that going against him. There is a Tombstone feel to the whole arc that is prefaced by a beer belch from Dogsbreath that sounds like he is saying the name 'Earp' when someone asks him what his name is. The jokes are constant and most land spectacularly. As with the rest of the series, stereotypes of people of all races are amplified. If a Native American named Red Feather Patel—as in feather, not dot—leads to secondhand embarrassment, this series isn't a good fit. For everyone else, enjoy.
