Reading The Granny JJ Adventures Vol 5, Moh Wok Foh Do! by Joshua and Glenda Cartwright is much like being a detective. While British English is the official language of Guyana, most people in Guyana speak Guyanese Creole. That language is easy for native English speakers to recognize, especially if you read it out loud. Guyanese Creole, the language of Granny JJ, Guyana’s Daily Detective, is the language that the Cartwrights have chosen for these tales. The title “Moh Wok Foh Do!” translates as “More Work to Do.” Granny JJ’s old-fashioned wisdom has much in common with the Brer Rabbit tales, but all the characters in these stories are human, indeed. Granny JJ takes on the courtship of young folks and the courtship of herself in old age. She solves robberies and mysterious disappearances. She even gets her grandson to talk to her about what’s bothering him.

The Granny JJ Adventures Vol 5, Moh Wok Foh Do! by Joshua and Glenda Cartwright, like the previous four books in this series, is based on the real Miss Juliet, who passed in May 2021. She will be fondly remembered by her nine children, many grandchildren, and the fans she has gained through these books recounting her adventures, both real and imagined. The Guyanese government bought copies of the first book in this series for the schools to help children learn Guyanese Creole. Readers will enjoy learning the Guyanese Creole language along with following Granny JJ’s adventures and detective work. The more difficult words and phrases are translated at the bottom of the pages. Recommended for middle-grade and older readers who like detective stories and learning about other cultures.
