I just finished reading The Hunter of Hertha, book two in author Tess Collins’ The Midnight Valley Quartet, and I can’t get over what an enjoyable read it was. Following the story of Connor Herne over the course of several decades of his life - from that of a rambunctious boy to the time when he is married, the father of a rambunctious daughter of his own and a high school teacher - this book is one that will make you fall in love with both the characters and the Appalachian mountain setting where it takes place. Small town adventure and intrigue, even a murder is dealt with, but the primary story line is that of Connor’s discovery of hidden nuclear waste in the mountains he loved so much as a child, and the detrimental effects that same waste has on his beloved daughter, Tallulah, years later. It may take the downfall of the powerful of Quinntown to eradicate this treacherous problem, but Connor is determined that he will do whatever it takes to keep his daughter and everyone else safe. What he learns about his own history in the process just might help him make sense of his mysterious past.
The Hunter of Hertha kept me interested from page one. Touching on themes of the importance of respect for the environment, familial support, and the love of where one comes from, I found Tess Collins’ book to be a wonderful read. Suspenseful and with action in just the spots you’d want it, I couldn’t stop turning the pages, even long after I should have gone to sleep. The Hunter of Hertha would appeal to any reader that loves a book filled with drama, any lover of fiction, and anyone who just loves a great story. I look forward to reading more books in this series, and to see what else this author has to offer in the future.
