The Intrepid Three is a young adult sci-fi story by Brianna and Matthew Penfold. Dez Gibbous is a fifteen-year-old employee of the ruthless E-Corp corporation working twelve hours a day to care for her parents in Euporia. Fourteen-year-old Arabella Rey is the daughter of an influential bureaucrat from Aurelia. Walter Johnson is a happy-go-lucky seventeen-year-old in the technocratic world of Immerxia. On paper, these three teenagers have nothing in common. But soon, they find themselves recruited by the mysterious Author, the creator of the Universe, who asks them to lead the fight to save humanity from the Murk led by the nefarious Switcher. Gifted with unique powers, the three unlikely heroes must gather allies before the Murk overwhelm the Lumen in Animus and force their way through all the planes of reality.

The battle of good versus evil, light versus dark, is as old as time. Brianna and Matthew Penfold seamlessly integrate the classic theme in this riveting tale about three young heroes finding themselves at the center of momentous events upon which the fate of humanity resides. The Intrepid Three is deliciously unpredictable, strikingly relevant, but above all, an absolute belter of a novel. E-Corp seemed like a nod to Sam Esmail's hit television show, Mr. Robot. I enjoyed the distinct backgrounds and personalities of the three heroes and their unique powers. The character of Author also brings a layer of mystery to the story that adds to its charm. Overall, a brilliant start to a new series.

The Intrepid Three: Animus Revealed is a science fiction fantasy by the author team of Brianna and Matthew Penfold and is intended for the young adult reading audience. In this engaging work with prominent sci-fi concepts and background Christian themes, we meet three very different teenage characters living in dissimilar futuristic societies. When Dez, Arabella, and Walter are brought together by a mysterious universal figure referred to as Author, they discover that their lives have a much higher purpose. Destined to heal broken worlds and bring harmony to the universe with their unique connections to the past, present, and future, this trio must first overcome dark forces that seek to destroy them.

Brianna and Matthew Penfold have created a superbly engaging work of young adult adventure that ties both science fiction and fantasy attributes into a concise and enjoyable story. I found the introduction to the different worlds and technologies interesting, especially as it provides a fair bit of social commentary by holding up a mirror to our tech-obsessed planet. The way that each character is shaped by their experiences worked well to add different personalities and unique skills to the plot. I enjoyed Arabella’s emotional journey the most, coming from a place of privilege and having to face a pretty tough reality check. Each of the characters offers something for readers to relate to. The Intrepid Three is a highly recommended read and a great addition to any young adult fan’s shelf.

Dez, a teenage worker in Euporia, is forced to work grueling hours to serve a corporation that constantly reminds its people that they can be replaced. Arabella is an obedient student raised in a family that comes from wealth, with a mother who wants nothing more than for her children to take on positions of power like hers. Walter comes from a place where everyone shares everything about their personal life via social media posts. Author, the writer of everything, chooses them as key players as Author battles with the Murk and the Switcher. The Switcher believes that Author is losing the ink to continue writing everything in existence. Is Switcher right, or is Author more powerful than Switcher imagines? How can the three chosen teenagers change the flow of the battle? Find out in The Intrepid Three: Animus Revealed by Brianna and Matthew Penfold.

The Intrepid Three by Brianna and Matthew Penfold is a highly imaginative story that takes us through a plot that brings a whole new meaning to our world. I love how the relatable characters, who all come from different walks of life, work together to drive the story through the chaotic battle between Author and Author's adversaries. This interesting cast reveals that embracing differences in others can create the most remarkable friendships. The unique idea of Author writing everything in the universe, the Murk getting ready to pounce, and the Switcher watching and waiting for Switcher's chance to prove Author’s incompetence delivers a wild showdown between good and evil that keeps you wondering what will happen next and who will be the victor. I highly recommend it to any young adult or adult who loves a fantasy story that can’t be put down.
