The Last Jewish Gangster: The Early Years is the amazing story of Michael Hardy and how he became a gangster. David Larson reveals that Michael was doomed from the start when his Jewish mother left him with his Southern Baptist grandpa at birth, later coming into and out of his young life. Like any other young boy, Michael wanted nothing more than his mother’s love, and he would get it the only way he knew how. Michael was always in trouble both in school and on the streets, finding ways to steal and fight at an early age. Michael spent time in youth detention centers and prison both at home and in Mexico, but though each time he promised not to get into any more trouble, it seemed that trouble followed him. This is a real look at how and why a boy turned to a life of crime. Michael just wanted his mother’s love, but while she was there to get him out of each disaster, he never felt her love.
I found it impossible not to like Michael and hope that he would find his way. The Last Jewish Gangster is book one of a series that details his life up until his early twenties. I am anxiously awaiting book two to see where Michael’s path will go next. David Larson brought each page to life and I felt as if I knew Michael. New York is my home town and I lived there at the same time as Michael. I could feel, hear and see so much of where he was and how real it was. I am not an avid non-fiction reader but the title was hard to resist and I am so glad as is a really good book, which would make a great TV show or a full-length movie. I highly recommend putting this on your must-read list.
