The Legend of See Bird: Kiamichi is the third part of a western trilogy by Karl L. Stewart. Based on the real life of a Choctaw cowboy who adopted the author’s grandmother as a young girl when he married her mother, it is set mostly in 1903 as See Bird and his trusty sorrel horse Kiamichi leave his new family in West Virginia to go rodeoing in several Western states to earn enough money to see them through the winter. On the way, See Bird and Kiamichi experience one adventure after another, the most dramatic of which is an encounter with President Teddy Roosevelt who has embarked on a great two-month-long Western tour, but gets side-tracked in North Dakota by horse rustlers and a killer puma.

In The Legend of See Bird: Kiamichi, Karl L. Stewart gives us a wonderful, engaging, and entertaining tale of an “everyday hero” in the person of his great-grandfather See Bird, plus a driving force for progressive political change in the person of President Roosevelt. Set against the social and historical undercurrents of the day, the narrative is well-paced with a dramatic plot and well-drawn characters. Roosevelt’s personality as an educated man born to privilege and a deeply committed naturalist is brought to vivid light and provides an interesting contrast to the common sense, cultural wisdom, innate good-heartedness, and instinctive sensibilities of See Bird. Both are men of courage and capability, for all that they come from opposite ends of the socio-economic spectrum. An enjoyable read.
