“Do any of us know who we are?” That’s the loaded question that plagues all our minds from time to time, but most notably during our coming-of-age years. In The Legend of the Solstice by Lauren Evers, three young people, Ethan, Isolde, and Ridley, have reached their twentieth birthday, all at the same time on the Winter Solstice. Something strange happened at their births, and now something weird is happening again. It’s quite bizarre. Everyone looks at them differently, and they feel something different inside them. For example, Ethan, who had been going deaf for almost a year, can now hear clearly. The three don’t know each other, but they’re somehow connected, and they’re suddenly developing some frightening powers. They each have a secret, one even they don’t know yet. They have to remember this secret before it’s too late.

Lauren Evers’s young adult novel, The Legend of the Solstice, is the first book in the Modern Mythos series. Weaving together three fantastic tales, Evers creates a web of fate-induced fables, complete with ancient mythological beings, enemies, and loves, and a war the three protagonists would rather forget. The three are launched into a quest to discover who they are, one that will challenge their beliefs that they are human. The plot follows the three young people as they awaken on their twentieth winter solstice and realize they must find the other two to begin their quest together as strangers. Evers uses descriptive narrative effectively to set the scene of each part of the story. Character development is well done and dialogue helps move the story forward. Overall, an engaging and compelling read, full of magic, adventure, mythology, romance, and so much more.
