In The Migrating Millimunger by Charlotte Chaplin, a little pink millimunger with a bright red nose is homeless after being chased off by a big, mean crocodile. Finally, after searching for refuge, scared and alone at sea, she arrives at Blue Bear Island on a dark and stormy night. But instead of a warm welcome, the first blue bear that sees her runs away! The bears of Blue Bear Island don’t know anything about millimungers, and they are afraid of her. But even though the bears aren’t sure what will happen with a millimunger living on their island, a compassionate baby bear sympathizes with the little millimunger’s plight. So they take her back and make her feel at home, keeping her safe from the crocodile and sharing their food and shelter with her.
Charlotte Chaplin has created a captivating children’s book highlighting what many real millimungers, migrants and refugees, face. Like the blue bears, people's first reaction when confronted with something new is fear, and they begin to think the worst. But after giving someone a chance, what ends up happening is the joining and celebration of cultures and, more importantly, safety for the person in dire need. Through The Migrating Millimunger, Charlotte Chaplin is subtly helping build sympathy and understanding in young children. She has done this using a simple story and simple words, with bright and exciting illustrations. To keep kids engaged, a “find the crab” is hidden in each picture. This children’s book is worthy of a spot on every little one’s bookshelf.
