"Be careful in what you pursue, lest you find yourself consumed by the object you desire." The Mirror Shop by Nicholas Bundock is about a middle-aged couple, Luke and Eve. They live an ideal life as he owns and operates a business, and she is a psychotherapist. However, from another perspective, their life is mundane and filled with routine, an existence of comfort rather than passion. One day, Luke, who could represent the unnoticed man in a crowd, sees his cozy reality shattered when a muse-like younger woman, Rhona, enters his shop. Luke's whimsical daydreams of romance take an unexpected turn when Rhona takes an interest in him and actively pursues him. Throwing caution to the wind while jeopardizing a decades-long relationship, Luke enters a new and exciting reality, one fraught with risk and beckoning darkness.

Although The Mirror Shop has a very down-to-earth theme, it is also a complex story that left me wondering if Nicholas Bundock was relating a work of fiction or a real-life experience. The author did an excellent job of crafting his characters, and I appreciated his use of innuendo at pivotal and intimate moments to define them. Although the ending seemed a touch contrived, it not only surprised me, but it worked exceptionally well and helped fashion the general tone of the novel. Overall, The Mirror Shop is an exceptionally clever tale and a captivating novel that will please fans of dramatic fiction while also making some readers take a good look in the mirror.
