The Moonshine Murders: The Jailer's Daughter Mysteries is a work of fiction penned by author Joy York in the mystery, suspense, and adventure genres. The story follows Christi, a reserved teenager, and her adventurous cousin Lily in 1970s Mississippi. When Christi's uncle, a deputy sheriff, is injured investigating a moonshine still, Lily, determined to discover the truth despite local ATF mistrust, ropes Christi and their friend Troy into her investigation. Their amateur sleuthing leads them into danger as they confront bootleggers and stumble upon the aftermath of a deadly ambush. As the danger escalates, the teens grapple with loyalty, trust, and the consequences of their actions, all while navigating their first experiences with love and adulthood. This fast-paced southern mystery blends coming-of-age themes with historical intrigue, keeping readers guessing until the end.

Author Joy York utilizes every drop of research, imagination, and detail to craft an immersive novel of 1970s rural Mississippi, filled with tension and adventure from beginning to end. I loved the way the author adeptly captured the essence of the period, from the cultural backdrop to the characters' mannerisms and dialogue. Everything was brought to life with atmospheric language and attention to detail. Christi's quiet strength and Lily's fearless determination made for a compelling dynamic as they dive headfirst into danger, and I adored their dialogue exchanges and unique characterization. The suspenseful plot kept me eagerly turning pages with a great pace and sense of when to shift a scene. Additionally, the budding romance subplot added a charming layer of sweetness amidst the mystery, giving a little ray of hope and keeping things light, even when the plot took its most dangerous turns. Overall, The Moonshine Murders is a highly recommended read that seamlessly blends mystery, coming-of-age, and historical elements, appealing to both young adult and adult readers alike.
