The Morac by Colleen Bratley is the story of Julian, Aleah, Kelton, and Marquita, four friends just out of high school off for a leisurely weekend at a cabin owned by Julian's parents. Strange events begin happening just after a bright flash in the sky is seen, and it's not long before they find their entire world has been turned upside down, beginning with the disappearance of seemingly every other person on earth. Getting back to Julian's home in town, the four must set about trying to find out what's happened to their families. Every possibility seems to lead nowhere, but then they begin to find clues on the computer belonging to Julian's dad. What they uncover seems impossible, yet, a letter left to Julian only confirms the truth of it all. Learning there are eight other “chosen ones,” the four friends determine to find them and to figure out exactly what it is the Morac want from them so they can get their old life back.

The Morac is a gripping story. I can only imagine these four young people, barely out of high school, having to cope with a situation like this. Colleen Bratley did a great job of molding these characters, the situation, and the world they now found themselves in. Their fears and sorrows at the loss of their families was touching, and I truly felt their sadness, but I also felt their hope and determination that they could overcome their situation and get back to normality. My kudos to the author for her skill in wrapping me up in her story, and for making me feel so deeply for these four, all the while carrying me along to what I had hoped would not be a frightening ending. I was glad to see it was just the beginning!
