Melody Mouse loves music; she has been well-named. It’s a good thing she loves music because she lives in Beethoven’s house. She’s fascinated by this musical genius who is both angry and passionate and has all kinds of emotions in between. In The Mouse in Beethoven’s House by Chanel Rose Chow, Melody Mouse is about to embark on a musical adventure of a lifetime all because she wants to learn more about Beethoven and his dynamic music. She’s shocked when she learns that the composer is deaf, but she’s overwhelmed with joy when she accidentally falls into the composer’s jacket pocket and ends up accompanying him to a premiere performance of his famous Symphony Number 9.

Chanel Rose Chow’s picture book, The Mouse in Beethoven’s House, is a sweet, endearing story about a little mouse and her musical neighbor. What a great way to teach young readers about one of the classical music greats! The language is simple and almost lyrical, like some of Beethoven’s music the author chooses to introduce in this story. Young readers will applaud Melody Mouse’s enthusiasm and laugh at some of her antics, especially when she falls off the piano keys with one of Beethoven’s famous opening lines, “Dun Dun Dun Dun!” The bright, bold, colorful, and spectacular illustrations complement the story and the music being introduced. Melody Mouse is certainly one very lucky mouse to live in such a musical paradise. This is a fun story, engaging, entertaining, and educational all in one. Loved it.
