The Needle’s Eye by Deanna Nese is a slim book, a story with a lot of symbolism, one that explores the idea of destiny and friendship, a tale laced with wonderful insights and wisdom. It is a story with powerful spiritual dimensions. It wasn’t until he found himself alone at nineteen, with nothing but his thoughts and his infant girl, Eden, that Mitch began to seek the world he’d known as a boy, the Inside. The Inside is the place of serenity, peace, and harmony, while the Outside witnesses a lot of chaos and indifference from humankind. Eden grew up in the Inside. But she’d soon meet Sterling: “This little guy was a bomb ready to detonate. He was offensive, unruly and had no friends. Other kids feared him.” But everything will change when Eden meets Sterling.

Deanna Nese’s The Needle’s Eye is a story that will entice young readers. I enjoyed the characters, including the Sage, the embodiment of wisdom, Mitch, Eden, and Sterling. This is a story about the beauty of encounter. It is written in simple, beautiful prose and in a voice that will appeal to young and young adult readers. The story may not have many dramatic moments, but it is unique in that it is soul-searching and looks at the human values of love and hospitality in beautiful yet subtle ways. At times it reads like an allegory of life. There are many lessons readers will get from this book and I enjoyed how the author talks about the Inside, like the world we know as kids and always grow up longing for. Could it be the heaven we carry around with us? I enjoyed this story and its powerful message, a story that will remind readers of the children they once were and the children they are called to be. It was an exquisitely delightful read.
