The Pen Thief and the Orbit of Uncertainty by Tasha Madison follows Arnie Schmidt, a number nerd who, rather than going to college, starts a new job at his uncle’s very successful accounting firm. Despite the family connection, he is given a position in the mailroom, literally at the very bottom of the company. On his first day, he meets the object of his desire, the beautiful Aurora in accounts, and his nemesis, Erik. Erik had made Arnie’s life at school miserable and now, to Arnie’s horror, he is working in the mailroom. Uncle Gregory is ex-military and, when he learns of Arnie’s desire to impress Aurora, he takes Arnie under his wing. Whilst Arnie is staying for the weekend, Uncle Gregory takes him to a home clearance sale to buy more professional clothes. At the sale, Arnie meets the homeowner, Mr. Cuthbert, and his daughter Kayley. The two get into a conversation and Arnie is given a set of three pens. This is no ordinary gift and they are the start of Arnie, Erik, and Kayley’s troubles and adventures.

The Pen Thief and the Orbit of Uncertainty is book one of a three-part series by Tasha Madison. Madison’s writing is engaging and her world, despite being up to date, has a historical feel to it that gives it a magical quality. Aimed at the YA audience, it is a story of growth, challenges, young romance, and self-discovery. The book has a definite charm, and I found myself captivated by the main characters. Arnie is flawed and, like most teenagers, learns through his mistakes. Magic, secret societies, and intrigue are the recipe that makes this a book you will enjoy devouring. I found this a very enjoyable read.
