Jeremiah and Millie are two siblings who, along with their parents, enjoy the desert and riding their motorcycles. The family hopes to buy a particular piece of land that will allow them to pursue their dream of opening a camp for boys. Jeremiah and his dad run into an interesting character, Minnesota Mike, on one of their trips to the desert. He shares some interesting tales about haunted skeletons and hidden gold mines. Millie is desperately hoping that her adoption into the family will go through, but things are not going according to plan. Will the siblings and their new friend Paisley be able to figure out if the legends are true? Will the family's dream of living in the desert happen? Readers will enjoy racing to the end of the story to find out!

The Skeleton and the Lantern combines mystery, adventure, and friendship. Sherri Kukla has written a Christian-based mystery filled with lots of action. The chapters are brief and end with many cliffhangers which will encourage reluctant readers to continue reading. Millie and Jeremiah tell the story in alternating chapters. Kukla has done a good job of creating interesting and believable characters. It is clear from the detailed descriptions that Kukla knows the desert and motorcycle riding intimately. Readers will get a clear sense of what it feels like to go racing through the desert with the wind in your hair. The Skeleton and the Lantern is the first in the MotoMysteries series and will be enjoyed by both mystery fans and thrill-seekers.
