The Spiritual Side of Disability: The Lightseeker’s Way to Thrive with a Special Needs Child by Helena Clare is a spiritual self-help book that utilizes the author’s clairaudience, which is the ability to commune with the spirit world, to assist readers who cannot receive messages from this world to be educated on the divine nature of their special needs child. Clare begins with the backstory of her son Saafi, born with cerebral palsy, then moves into her technique for opening ourselves up to receive messages from the celestial kingdom. She speaks of the difficulties in her marriage to the father of her sons, visualizations for a wide variety of issues, health, finances, a positive outlook, combating negative energy and emotions, and goal creation, among many other things.

As someone who grew up alongside a special-needs sibling, The Spiritual Side of Disability was an incredible find even after the opportunity to employ it in this particular situation had passed—at least from the physical world. I had always wondered what it really was like inside my beautiful brother's head and in his heart and Helena Clare was able to tell me a bit, and then teach me how to receive more. There is no question that the day-to-day caring for one member of our physical, nuclear family who receives more from us than others constrain relationships. In Clare’s family, the stress and an ultimatum actually came from her parents and this is really the moment I connected to her and her story. It was exactly the same in our family. Further on in the book but in relation to this connection, the most helpful section for me was on clearing the negative energy of “drainers”. The family member who was not at all supportive was still a burden on my emotional well-being. She was only in my life for 1% of the time but still somehow consumed what felt like 99% of my energy. I am currently working on visualization and taking a proactive stance and letting it go. There is so much to learn from Clare and I am so grateful to have her guidance in the written form. I’m certain others are too.
