Author Ken McGarrie explores the essentials of running a restaurant as a manager in The Surprise Restaurant Manager. He insists that this business is the most unpredictable on a global scale. As a competent chef, he looks at both the success and challenges of the restaurant business. As part of the hospitality industry, restaurants rely heavily on experience to be successful. Ken McGarrie refers to his management experience as spanning every type of concept. Including quick-service outlets, high-energy clubs, etc. The key here, as we see from his experience as a manager, is to specialize in areas that require maximum potential by helping owners maximize the guest experience profitably.

This book can be used both as a guidebook and a learning tool. The Surprise Restaurant Manager is equipped with a series of questions that target the reader's motive. I was able to use this to my advantage, as the answers to the questions provided key insights. Opportunities are often determined by the strengths and weaknesses of an individual. Ken McGarrie reflects on how these opportunities come about and what to do with them. The role you play determines a lot about the kind of manager you'll become. Working to inspire your team is the main motive for a manager. But this can only be effective if you consider it your real job and not a reprieve. So the key question I was left to ask myself is: How knowledgeable, engaging, and confident can I be to run a successful restaurant? I think the answers lie in this book. It's highly recommended and worth a read.
