If you enjoy spoofy humor and medieval fantasy settings with dragons, monsters, and deadly encounters, The Tale of Sir Reginald by Roland Hesmondhalgh is for you. Overweight, balding, and nearly penniless, Sir Reginald meets a somewhat fearsome stranger in the local pub. They agree to travel together to allow Reginald to collect a bounty for killing a monster that is harassing a nearby settlement and the stranger to journey into far lands on a mysterious quest with Reginald as his well-paid guide. Reginald has never done a knightly deed in his life, so why now? His wife has thrown him out of the castle for his ale-guzzling “couch potato” ways. If he wants back in, he must improve his image and bring home the gold.
In The Tale of Sir Reginald, Roland Hesmondhalgh gives us an utterly entertaining story that offers light-hearted quirky comedy on its surface but is surprisingly philosophical in its depth. The comedy had me chuckling out loud and the dramatic action-filled plot was engaging. This is a fun story to read, and the characters of both Reginald and the stranger are skillfully drawn. I enjoyed watching as the stranger’s unexpectedly guru-like influence opened Reginald’s eyes to the world beyond his privileged castle lifestyle to reflect on the true meaning of knighthood. If Reginald does return to his wife, he won't be the same knight who left. The narrative leaves us hanging a little, so I’m hoping that the author has a sequel up his sleeve.
