The Things We Left Sleeping is a work of fiction in the interpersonal drama subgenre. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Kathryn Lund. The book follows Evie and Stevie who share their whole lives until they suffer a death in the family and Evie’s health takes a turn for the worse. As their different journeys lead them into isolated and lonely new realities, the two must confront the things they’ve avoided confronting most of their lives if they are to gain the wisdom and understanding that they need to find each other once more.

This book certainly breaks a few molds as it weaves its tale of two women trying to recover and understand themselves better in the wake of tragedy. Never shy to push the boundaries of its medium a little to further its discussion of mental health, The Things We Left Sleeping is a book that will leave a lasting impression on any who read it. The feelings it is able to evoke, as we ask ourselves questions to which there are no ready or simple answers, are powerful and often left me stunned and contemplative. Overall, author Kathryn Lund has developed a mastery of dramatic writing that allows her to push and pull on the reader’s emotional range at will as the story unfolds and we witness the separate-yet-intertwined journeys of Evie and Stevie as they try to find their way back to the imperfect life that was perfect to them.
