The Thrice-Gifted Child is the second book of the Shadow Journey Series by Jo Allen Ash. The book opens with sixteen-year-old desert warrior Grace Irese and her friends Duncan, Mika, and Carina - together with Duncan's extraordinarily gifted yet unstable sister Resa - fleeing from the tyrant warlord Stone Tiran after they escaped from the prison colony of Emerald. As the little group traverses the dangerous lands known as The Wilds, Grace struggles to keep a secret hidden from her friends. They encounter a group of Wildrons that reluctantly agrees to provide them with sanctuary and take them to the City of All Dwellers. But not everything is as it seems, and soon new foes and allies emerge as Grace and her friends find themselves separated and fighting for survival once again.

The Thrice-Gifted Child is a page-turner of a sequel to Jo Allen Ash's young adult dystopian thriller, The Shadows We Make. Weaving an intricate web of a plot infused with both sci-fi and fantasy elements, the book tells a gripping survival story that doesn't allow your attention to waver for a single moment. The characters are full of conflict and inner struggles, and their distinct personality traits make them riveting to read. Grace and Duncan's relationship dynamic was particularly compelling. The plot has a smooth flow to its pacing and some unexpected twists and turns will keep readers on their toes. I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys dystopian sci-fi or fantasy.
