The Transgender Myth: Through the Gender Looking Glass is a deeply personal and harrowing work penned by author Paula Mirare Overby. Written for mature and adult readers due to some distressing scenes and graphic content, this frank, honest and raw narration gives us the story of Paula, who was born male but never fitted the mold of what was expected of the male body. Living like a girl in her own mind, but forced into segregation and relationships by the ideas and expectations of society, Paula’s journey goes through many highs and lows, from marriage and children to court and custody, with all the emotional and medical rigamarole of becoming the woman she always knew she was along the way.

A particularly engaging point about this reading experience is the narration and narrative quality which author Paula Mirare Overby brings to her story. The text is written in a conversational format but sometimes breaks into a wider narration for important scenes, giving readers a dual image of the close-up, emotional experience that Paula has, whilst also casting a wider lens over society; for example, the judgments made in the courtroom. There are many different episodes, some of which are quite shocking and upsetting, but Paula writes with the same strength and determination that she shows in her actions, which keeps readers reassured and supported through the harrowing times to reach the triumphs with her. Overall, The Transgender Myth: Through the Gender Looking Glass is an important autobiography raising awareness of the struggle for transgender rights.
