K.M. McFarland's The Veil Between Worlds takes us to America's most haunted city, New Orleans, on a Halloween night. Here, we meet Rose Brighton, a twenty-year-old girl who can see and talk to the dead. On this night, when the veil between our world and the underworld is believed to be the thinnest, Rose and her best friend Brooke decide to attend a Halloween party at the Chevalier House, one of the oldest paranormally active houses in the city. All seems to be going well for Rose and Brooke until they cross paths with a man who is supposed to be dead but is still among the living. Five years ago, Darrin Cross desperately made a deal with Papa, a being from the Voodoo underworld, after making a terrible mistake. Through the deal, he acquired great wealth and fame. In turn, after every five years, on every Halloween, he had to hand over a soul, or he would have to cross over to the underworld. As the mist around him grows strangely heavy and there is a sudden power outage in the house, Darrin knows the time to pay the price has finally come. Who between Rose and Brooke will be the victim? Or will Darrin finally consider facing the fate he sealed five years ago?

I was completely engrossed as I read this book. K.M. McFarland blends mystery and suspense to develop a fantastic paranormal thriller. The adventure starts as a woman loved by everyone reincarnates just in time to thwart an evil witch's plan. Then it gets even more epic as we move from the busy night of Halloween into the invisible world, where we meet a powerful being who decides who dies and who lives. Though there's a lot of fascinating stuff going on in the spirit world, I couldn't wait to return to the physical world to get more of Rose. She's a dedicated and hardworking young woman. She would be a great role model to encourage young adults wanting to make something for themselves in today's world. The book was generally character-driven because the characters engineered the development of the plot. They all actively participated in the story and made it very lively. More than offering the reader a captivating story that will stay with them for a long time, The Veil Between Worlds is a groundbreaking story that redefines the paranormal genre, mainly the world of Voodoo and the afterlife. There is also excellent humor that adds a lot of fun to the supernatural aspects. The Veil Between Worlds is the first book I've read by K.M. McFarland, and it won't be my last.
