Author Biography

Born and raised in Canada, Brent Lymer was reared on hockey, and strongly influenced by Canada's third official language, sarcasm. Since his days working as a doorman, he's worked in the software industry developing web-based applications, co-founded a successful ecommerce business, started a digital marketing agency, and actively raises money in the fight against breast cancer.

As many an employee review has found, Brent has many skills but no specific talent. Undaunted by this, The Velvet Rope is his first novel - encouraged primarily by the nagging of friends and family to find another audience for the same old stories he has been boring them with for the past 15 years.

Brent currently resides in Las Vegas, where he works from home, wearing gym shorts.

The Velvet Rope is a memoir written by Brent Lymer, detailing life as a nightclub doorman in the 1990s. Working in a low-paying, high risk job is the most fun that Brent had ever had. Wearing a suit and working in an office means having to be careful at all times that you don’t offend or hurt people’s feelings, but working the door at a busy nightclub allows him to act like a man and enjoy life at the same time. Whenever Brent shows up at his day job, sporting a black eye after a rough night on the job, he tells the curious-minded that it is a sports injury from a hockey stick during a game from the night before. Some believe him. One of the most important aspects of the job is knowing that your colleagues will have your back (and that they know that you have theirs) at all times. The other is being able to win a debate over whether Superman or Batman would be victorious in a fight against each other. Often, when ‘escorting’ one bad apple from the premises, the bad apple’s friends will want to take you on for simply doing your job. Without backup, 'hockey stick' sporting injuries become a regular event.

I grabbed this book out of intrigue, yet found myself laughing out loud before I had even hit the first chapter. Brent Lymer has a unique spin on the English language which is up front and jumps out at you, tickling your funny bone one minute, while leaving you stunned and fully gobsmacked the next. The Velvet Rope is truly an eye-opener, revealing the perks and perils of being a doorman/bouncer/host. Thanks to Brent Lymer’s hard-hitting delivery, in depth behind-the-scenes views, and stories of the dangers of the job, the humor that keeps the night flowing smoothly, and the rough-and-tumble that drunken patrons put forward, I have a whole new respect for the staff that work the door of any establishment, keeping the patrons and employees safe while ensuring their own people stay in one piece by the end of the night. I very much enjoyed reading The Velvet Rope and recommend it to anybody who loves a good laugh while learning about the unsung heroes that keep us safe at party time.

In a fun and funny new read by debut author Brent Lymer, The Velvet Rope: Based on Real Events is a book that will have readers engaged from the first page and will keep them reading through to the very last. Following the exploits of Brent's own life as he finds himself working as a nightclub doorman at the somewhat unlikely age of thirty, each chapter gives a new story of another thing that happened during the course of the job. Mixing alcohol, sexual situations and a whole lot of testosterone is definitely not a good idea, and much of what Brent and his fellow workers encountered dealt with one, two or all three of these things at once. Each story is told with a wry wit and an extremely realistic portrayal of this often overlooked profession, and will keep readers laughing throughout!

I very much enjoyed The Velvet Rope: Based on Real Events. Author Brent Lymer has done an awesome job in giving his readers a synopsis of his more humorous experiences during his time as doorman/bouncer at a nightclub in the 1990s. Anyone who has spent any time at all on the nightclub circuit will absolutely recognize the personalities involved in most of his altercations, and might even see a little bit of themselves in some of the characters. Any reader looking for a fun and funny read about an extremely relatable topic should absolutely give The Velvet Rope a read. I am pleased to recommend this book, and hope I get a chance to read more from the hilarious author Brent Lymer as soon as it might become available!

Set in the early 1990s, The Velvet Rope is a candid description of life as a bar bouncer in Vancouver, British Columbia. When Brent Lymer realizes that his career as a relatively successful suit wearing, behind-the desk professional is lacking in stimulation, he joins forces with several companions to work the club scene. Serving as a work of “non-fiction fiction,” this memoir takes us behind the scenes of the nutty, intense, and often graphic world of late night/early morning socialites. Lymer admittedly describes his chosen career path as being “sprinkled with artistic license, unadulterated bullshit, innuendo, hearsay, and blatant fabrication.” While the public sees the job of a doorman as just another minimum paid vocation, Brent Lymer brings forth the vivid events that occur on a typical “day at the office,” not recognized as the high intensity responsibility of protecting club patrons as well as the integrity of the business owner that it rightfully deserves. The Velvet Rope introduces us to the many vulgar and often outrageous antics of club goers in a city of enthusiastic bar hoppers.

Although the language and events described in this memoir are not appropriate for the sensitive reader, this is a highly entertaining portrayal of club scene life. I salute Lymer for bringing an unlikely job choice to the written page. The Velvet Rope, while based on true events, is an engaging fictional account of what really happens outside (and sometimes inside) the walls of popular watering holes this side of the Canadian border. A fun read. Well done, Brent Lymer!
