The Women of Blackmouth Street by Thea Sutton brings us the story of Miss Georgia Buchanan, a female alienist. The year is 1891. Summoned to London with a note from a mysterious individual, Georgia also escapes from Boston after a tragedy befalls one of her patients. This tragedy is the leverage used to force her to hunt the killer mutilating women from the East Side. One party requires her to name an innocent man while the other requires her to steer away from that direction. Both are threatening to reveal the same information. Using her knowledge as a psychologist, Georgia tries to profile the true killer and save an innocent man. Will she succeed? Or will the truth unravel her in the process?
In this psychological thriller, the author has created a labyrinthine story with so many mental factors that navigating the alleys of London’s East Side will seem like a stroll through Hyde Park. A circular maze that leads the reader on a spectacular journey of dark secrets. Written from the main character’s perspective, we are able to analyze each piece of information only from one vantage point. This makes for on-the-edge-of-your-seat reading! The cast of characters is perfect to balance out the madness within with the madness without. Focus is placed on formidably strong female characters with human flaws to make them more relatable. The similarity of another unsolved crime at the same time and in the same area wasn’t lost on me. That is what makes this story so absolutely believable when combining it with the mental unbalance of a deranged killer.
