Author Biography

When my older daughter was three years old, I began writing poems that she and I could enjoy together. Years later, I found a scrapbook file with the poems, and decided to turn this one into a children's book.

There's an N on Your Nose by Dennis Canfield is a delightfully inventive take on an alphabet book. The poems and the pictures mesh perfectly. Canfield has written a poem that includes several body parts. Each stanza highlights the first letter in the body part. For example, "Was the H in your Hair a surprise?" Each verse shows a different animal excitedly getting ready to attend school. At the end of the story, all the letters of the alphabet are displayed. While not a traditional alphabet book, several of the letters are highlighted throughout the story uniquely and cleverly.

There's an N on Your Nose is a story that does so many things well. Librarians and teachers will love reading this book out loud because the rhymes flow effortlessly. The bonus is that kids can participate in the story by using each body part as it is mentioned. Early literacy skills abound in this title, with the letters for each word displayed in the illustrations. The pictures by Stella Maris are beautiful. Each page has so many fun things to see. I especially loved the illustration of the giraffe bending down to tie his shoe. Even though they are animals, diversity is included, so look carefully at the giraffe's legs. Dennis Canfield has written an instant classic in my opinion. He has hit all the right notes with an entertaining and memorable rhyme that kids and adults will want to read over and over. This is a must-buy for all early childhood collections.
