Author Biography

J.M.’s debut fantasy/magic series originally started as a bedtime story for his oldest son. The story turned into a saga, and one book turned into five. The first book in the series, Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows, is scheduled for release in February 2019.

When J.M. isn’t working on the Thomas Wildus books, you can find him playing with his kids, napping, or dreaming up new adventures. If you ever meet him and can’t think of anything to talk about, you might ask about Herman the Shark, the Kai and Eli stories, or why Riddle-Master by Patricia McKillip is his all-time favorite book. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll have questions and stories of your own (if you do, he’ll think that’s far more interesting).

Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows by J.M Bergen is a stunning fantasy novel about a twelve-year-old boy named Thomas. When Thomas was really young, his father told him that magic was real right before he left him. Thomas lived his life as an ordinary boy, until one day he asked about magic at a bookstore and was given the Book of Sorrows. Thomas soon learns that he has magical powers and is flown half way around the world to learn how to use them. He also learns that much is at stake, and that he has to protect a magical crystal from a man named Arius. Will Thomas rise to the challenge?

I really enjoyed reading Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows by J.M Bergen. The book was very descriptive and incredibly well written. The plot was intriguing and well thought through. I liked that the author had a new take on magic. There were funny parts throughout the story that made me giggle. The book has many plot twists that will leave the reader wondering which characters they can trust. The book will hook readers from the first page, and will keep them wondering what happens next throughout the story. The story had many extremely exciting scenes that will captivate the audience. The characters were very likeable and realistic. They were also very inspiring because they make the right choices. This book will entertain readers of all ages. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

Thomas Wildus’s simple life is turned upside down when he discovers that magic is real in Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows by J.M. Bergen. Living with his mom and enjoying time with his friends has been all Thomas has needed since his father disappeared seven years earlier. But Thomas never forgot his father’s final words: “Magic is real, Thomas.” So when he finds an old bookstore that has real magic books, Thomas begins to learn that there is more to his life than he ever realized. After uncovering secrets from an ancient text, The Book of Sorrows, Thomas returns to the book store and is introduced to even more surprises and unique people. Coincidences are starting to make sense and Thomas is whisked away for intense training to bring out his hidden magical abilities and to learn about the challenge that threatens to destroy the world. Thrust into the mystery of the book and the real-world quest one man has for total power, Thomas and his friends must trust their ability and fight harder than they would have ever thought possible to keep everyone safe.

J.M. Bergen has created a marvelous fantasy/sci-fi story for children and teens in Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows. With all the qualities a great book should have, the story holds your interest and offers a pleasing blend of legend and modern-day problems. Thomas must choose between good and evil, not without plenty of rewards either way, and accept the consequences of his actions in a mature manner. There is great guidance by adults, but decisions and hard work are Thomas’s to consider as he is faced with problems no child should experience. J.M. Bergen helps Thomas navigate these issues and provides a wonderful tale that anyone can enjoy. Great story! I love how it is complete in this volume but sets the stage for additional books.

Thomas, the protagonist of Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows by J.M. Bergen, is a bit of a nerd and loves book stores more than anything. One day, after a strange encounter, he discovers a book shop he's never seen or heard of before. Entering the store that did not have any other customers in it would change his life for good because he finally discovers what he always hoped to find: real magic. Usually book store clerks send him to the fantasy or new age aisle when Thomas asks for books about magic. Nobody ever takes him seriously, so he did not expect that the owner of the mysterious book store would have a very special book. Thomas receives an ancient text called The Book of Sorrows in exchange for some hours of work. He's allowed to read only one chapter a day, and needs to return the book as soon as he finished it. Because of this book, the 12-year-old boy learns about a secret family legacy and magical powers. Unfortunately, those discoveries come with a price, and the more he learns, the more dangerous life becomes for him and the people he cares about most.

While I don't quite fall into the main target audience of Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows, I thoroughly enjoyed following Thomas on his adventures. I love stories in which books are somehow part of a mysterious plot - and even as an adult I still kind of carry the hope in me that magic somehow does exist somewhere on this planet. So I can understand Thomas. I was also once a kid with a love for books and magic. Now I'm an adult with a love for books and magic, so I guess that hasn't changed much. Reading this truly well-written novel was a lot of fun for me. It had plenty of exciting moments, funny parts, intriguing developments, and characters you just have to love. I assume that Harry Potter fans would love Thomas Wildus too. And while the story is aimed at younger readers, adults can also enjoy it. For me, it was a nice way to unwind in the evenings!

Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows by J.M. Bergen is a sci-fi story with a strong appeal to young readers. Twelve-year-old Thomas’s life takes a dramatic turn when he receives an ancient text from a little man with strange eyes. It is called The Book of Sorrows, a gift that places the young protagonist on a path he’d never envisioned, not even in his wildest dreams. Now he is caught up in the web of his family's secret legacy and entrusted with a mission he’d rather were given to someone else. The more he seeks to understand this gift, the more his life is in danger. There is a powerful enemy bent on stopping him and this enemy is about to unleash the most nefarious power that would cause immense destruction. Follow Thomas as he makes new allies and relies on his friends for support.

J.M. Bergen has a great sense of character development and readers will be pulled in from the moment they encounter the protagonist. He is a young boy living an ordinary life, but then his routine is broken and he is propelled forward on a path that is filled with danger. As the story progresses, the protagonist is fleshed out, his curiosity growing in the same proportion as his character development. The plot is tight and complex, loaded with surprises that enrich the reading experience. Thomas Wildus and The Book of Sorrows grabbed my attention from the first page and I found myself caring about the characters and wondering where the story would go go next. Great prose, wonderful characters, and a setting filled with elements of adventure.
