Through My Eyes is a memoir about the mental and physical trauma that Sarah Jane has experienced. At seven, Sarah shares her first traumatic moment when her neighbor turns obsessive and threatens to kill her family. This makes her lose trust in people, and when her family moves to Portugal, her parents separate. Her father’s lack of interest in his children makes her feel rejected and unwanted. These feelings make her feel insecure, manifesting in her obsession with control over her weight and looks. By the age of eighteen, Sarah had two children. She left a physically and mentally abusive relationship, but more trauma came from a second toxic relationship, miscarriages, and physical and mental illnesses.

Sarah Jane’s story is a powerful testament to what can happen if you embrace positive change. Sarah was stuck in a cycle of self-hate and blame and was too vulnerable to realize that the people she trusted to love her were taking her for granted. Through My Eyes is a book that aims to help anyone in a similar situation realize that they deserve better. The author provides useful links to organizations that can be contacted to seek help and raise awareness about mental and physical health. I loved that the author consistently expressed how relieving it was to write about the traumatic moments she had kept secret for years. Her raw honesty made the writing sincere and authentic. I enjoyed reading this book because it has a smooth flow and conversational tone. The simple words made it easy to read and understand. I highly recommend Through My Eyes and cannot wait to read more books from this author.
