Tiny Tim and The Ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge, written by Norman Whaler and illustrated by Voxillustrations, is a reimagining and continuation of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. The story is told in staves, with the fifth and final stave showing a complete transformation of the miserly Scrooge spreading happiness and wealth to those he withheld prior. The primary benefactors of Scrooge's lavish distribution of wealth are his employee, Bob Cratchit, father to Tiny Tim, a charity collector who had been previously tossed out, and Scrooge's formerly estranged nephew, Fred. Whaler's extension picks up with a now-adult Tiny Tim who appears to have fallen once again into some degree of poverty despite Scrooge having promised the Cratchit family never would, as Tim's proposal to the woman he holds dearest is refused on account of him being poor once again. In time, Scrooge revisits Tim to deliver a reminder of God's message and to find a now destitute, but happy in her faith, Becky and her son.

Norman Whaler has created a fully immersive experience with Tiny Tim and The Ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge, combining his own original text shared in verse and stanzas, with the feel of limericks, and a voice reading with accompanying music to pull it all together. The message is firmly planted in God's grace and mercy, as well as the sustenance faith provides when the world does not. I admit I was a little confused by Tiny Tim being poor once again as no explanation is given on how that came about, but artistic license is often employed when the foundational work doesn't explicitly state that Scrooge and/or Fred will continue caring for the family Scrooge grew to love, and Whaler does well in weaving another series of encounters in the spirit of Christmas. Overall, this is the beautiful execution of an ambitious project, and one I have no doubt will find its way into the hearts of a new generation of readers.

A mean and selfish old man called Scrooge, a man who used to frown and scowl, changed his heart and made a promise never to let Tiny Tim down. Tiny Tim’s leg got better and he became very happy. As a grown-up, Tim became filled with love and faith. He fell in love with Becky, but her parents said “No,” because Tim was too poor. He became dejected after Becky was taken away from him, lost his faith in God, and became a very lonely person. Seven days before Christmas, Old Scrooge passed away, leaving Tim one last lesson: to always care and be kind to others. On Christmas Eve, Tim had a strange visit from the ghost of Scrooge who took him back to his past, showing him scenes where people helped others and leaving him with the wonderful message that we are meant to care for others. The encounter with the ghost of the one kind person in his life transformed Tim’s heart and led him to his one true love: Becky.

Tiny Tim and the Ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge is a well-written Christmas story that is beautifully illustrated, one that should be gifted to children, especially during this time of the year. I enjoyed the simplicity in the writing and Norman Whaler’s ability to capture the miracle of Christmas in the story. The changes in the lives of the characters contain a powerful message of love and faith, allowing readers to decipher the gift of sharing and caring. Christmas carols are also sprinkled through the story and readers can listen to them by just clicking on the play buttons. It is a heartwarming and inspiring story of love, faith, and Christmas.
