Author Biography

I live in New Hampshire and when my daughters were young, my husband and I took them camping every summer in the White Mountains. Although my daughters are grown up and have moved away, my husband and I still spend a lot of time in the White Mountains -- hiking, camping, and enjoying its beauty.
While "Trail Magic" is a tribute to the White Mountains National Forest, it is also a cautionary tale for parents (and babysitters) of young children. Children do get lost in the woods! The case of the little girl lost (and found) in 1941 is a true story, as is the tale of Sarah Whitcher who went missing in 1783. Although my character, Melanie, is fictional, children getting lost in the woods is very much a reality. A lost child affects not just the immediate family, but the entire community, who must quickly come together to search for and find the missing child.

Trail Magic: Lost in Crawford Notch by M.H. Sullivan is a YA adventure story. Alex Jackson runs a campground in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire. After losing his wife to a bombing, he wanted to start again with his daughter Angie. While Angie is meant to be watching four-year-old Melanie, she loses sight of her. Melanie has wandered into the wilderness; now, it's all hands on deck to find her. Angie discovers a mystery as the community comes together and the media flock to the campground. She believes in trail magic and stumbles over a similar story. In 1941, another child went missing at the same place. This is more than just a current-day search, as Angie wants to solve the older mystery, too.

Trail Magic by M.H. Sullivan is a very different type of story. Although it is a YA adventure story, it has a serious side. The story flips between the current day and the search for the little girl and the past, detailing the story of Angie’s parents and the family’s losses. We also get great insight into Melanie’s parents, their anger and sorrow, and the media: how one newswoman will do anything for her ratings. The characters are very well developed and the backstories leave no stone unturned. It’s clear that some characters have their own agenda in the tragic tale. This story is filled with suspense, tension, and no small amount of heartache. It isn’t what I would call a happy story, but stories like this in real life rarely are. Overall, it is a good story with plenty of action.
