If you enjoy memoirs about ordinary Americans who seem in retrospect to live extraordinary lives, Two Good Deals by Ken and Shirley Deal is for you. The Deals, born in 1926 and 1925 respectively, write about growing up in the Great Depression, living through WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Cold War eras, moving to several states and countries, raising their children as a military family, and other career and personal achievements before and during more than 70 years together. The narrative is divided into five parts: Shirley’s life until marriage, her memories from 1949–1997, the period 1997–2013, Ken’s memories from 1926–2015, and a collection of photographs. They describe their life experience as “an interesting adventure.” It is, yet it’s so much more.

In Two Good Deals, Ken and Shirley Deal give us a panoramic view of their lives and achievements over a period spanning almost 90 years. I enjoyed reading it. Although written primarily for the benefit of their extended family and descendants, there is a trove of recollections and observations in their memoirs that provide a ground-level view of American life from the Great Depression to the recent decade. Ken’s experience with rural education and farm life, Shirley’s handling of military family moves, Ken’s Air Force career in which he reached the rank of chief master sergeant in the accounting and finance field, and his subsequent career in real estate, and the ways they both served their communities and church, can provide fascinating content for any fan of Americana.
