Unraveling: A Journey in Poetry by Jennifer Maher is a collection of simple, heartfelt poems that describe the author’s experiences during various periods of her life. More so, this collection speaks for those who are not ready or who haven’t learned to speak up for themselves. The poems cover a range of subjects, but most of them are personal. There are poems about heartbreak, betrayal, abuse, relationships, and love. Other topics covered include identity, introspection, and art, especially music. Some are about the great men discovered by the poet during her genealogy research. I found that I appreciated these poems better after reading the section “About the Author” and would advise anyone starting this book to do the same.

What I liked most about this collection was its use of simple words, which aided clarity. Poetry is often guilty of being vague, but that is hardly the case with this collection and the writer provided a backstory to certain poems. I found a good deal of the poetry relatable, which endeared this book to me even more. Poetry, like all art, serves as a vehicle for expression, and Jennifer Maher expresses herself powerfully in her poems. Through some of her poems, I was able to explore my own experiences and emotions, and that was comforting. I liked the formatting of the poems and the unusual background used for some of them. I enjoyed reading Unraveling, and I recommend it to any reader in need of honest poetry.
