Valentine's Crushed: Children's First Chapter Book by RyAnn Hall is about a young girl whose family is moving to a new town and she has to attend a new school. It is right before Valentine's Day and she is worried that she won't get any Valentine's cards because no one will know her. Her family try to reassure her that it will be okay and, over the course of the book, she discovers that she was worrying over nothing and that all the kids at her new school are very friendly.

RyAnn Hall has picked an interesting topic in Valentine's Crushed: Children's First Chapter Book and one that children face from time to time that can cause a lot of upheaval. Moving from everything you have always known to a brand new house, town and school is a very scary experience for children. The way her family handle it is good in that they are supportive and try to take the girl's mind off the move by going out shopping and to see a movie. It is important to have a positive attitude towards these situations and to try to make children look forward to it rather than fear it. The book has a positive message that will be reassuring to young readers. The illustrations are colourful and eye catching and used well. The language used is simple, straight forward, but not patronizing. This book would appeal to young readers who are starting to read for themselves.
