Veggie Adventures: Mr. Broccoli by Natasha Mills is filled with fun and essential knowledge. Illustrated by Ramile Imac, this book is visual and will appeal to children between the ages of two and five. Baby Jacob is a victim of bullying at school because he’s not as strong as his peers. He bruises easily, loses his strength quickly and is not a favorite among the boys. Jacob cannot speak to his mom, even when she asks why he’s unhappy. He keeps going through this physical and mental torture until one eventful day. He returns from school to find his wardrobe wobbling. “Knock! Knock!” comes from his wardrobe. He opens the wardrobe to find two gigantic eyes staring at him. Jacob’s life is about to change!

I am impressed by the thoughtfulness that Natasha Mills put into writing Veggie Adventures: Mr. Broccoli. Children are the target audience of this book, but I strongly believe that there’s a message for adults in it. Hence, I recommend it to parents who have toddlers. One lesson I picked up is that the words of affirmation I teach my kids will shape their psyche in no small measure. Mills wrote using basic grammar, which children will understand without further explanation. I loved the length and use of colorful pictures because they will keep children interested. The endnote also proved a useful learning tool for me and my kids. Adapting Veggie Adventures: Mr. Broccoli into a cartoon series is something that I’d love to see!
