Video Game Takeover by D.T. Vaughn is a young reader action adventure story intended mainly for boys, but any young person who enjoys playing video games will most likely enjoy this book. The story follows a twelve-year-old named Caleb who lacks confidence and struggles with fear. He is grounded from playing video games and forced to go shopping with his mom, a terrible fate according to Caleb. While at the mall, strange events begin to occur and soon Caleb and his best friend, Farts, are pulled into a real live video game. Our two young heroes must overcome their fears and play by the rules of the game or their world will never be the same.

At the beginning of Video Game Takeover, I thought I was in for something similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It does have a similar humorous tone in the writing, along with occasional simplistic drawings that add to the humor. However, a few chapters into this book, I found that it had much more to offer than crude jokes. Author D.T. Vaughn has given us a sophisticated science fiction plot with colorful characters, exciting action, laugh-out-loud humor, and it even has some genuinely touching moments that give the story a strong heart. Sure, it has occasional fart jokes, but they were only a small part of a really fun story that is a joy to read. Kids of all ages will like Video Game Takeover, but I especially recommend it for young readers who like video games and have a vivid imagination.
