“Voodoo Intersection” by Yonie Richard is a book about Voodoo, its history and its influences in Haiti. In the various chapters, the author who grew up in Haiti leads the readers through the basic points people need to know about the history of Haiti and which part Voodo played in it. Yonie Richard describes an independent country that seems to be far from independent because Voodoo has such a crippling effect on the society. The different chapters talk about how Voodoo is used and which effect it has on society as a whole and on areas like education and the environment. It also describes how the Haitians who moved to other countries take Voodoo with them. The aim of the book is to educate but also to warn people about the possible consequences of what might happen if Voodoo is ignored.

Even though I found “Voodoo Intersection” by Yonie Richard well-written and very informative, I could not go through it in one go. I had to take one chapter at a time and let a bit of time pass before I'd move on to the next chapter as the content of the book is quite shocking. I did not know much about Haiti before and now I know so much that I probably didn't really want to know that much. This is not such a bad thing though because it is important to also know about the bad things that happen on our planet. The book talks about uncomfortable topics like animal and even human sacrifices. It talks about sex with animals (even with chickens!) and corpses. It talks about how people try to become more powerful or get revenge on others by using the dark magic of Voodoo. It is not for very sensitive readers. If you decide to get through the book, you are sure to be rewarded with a lot of new knowledge and a better understanding of Haiti and its people.
