Walking With the Sun written by Preethi Saravanakumar and illustrated by Julia Duclos is a colorful story about two best friends, an elephant called Gaja and an eagle called Garud, who stay together in a deep forest. On a very hot day, they seek shelter from the searing sun and long for it to set. Garud suggests that if they walk toward the west, the night might come early. However, when they do so they find that the heat from the sun merely becomes increasingly intense. They fail to realize that this is so because they are moving in the same direction as the sun, which was gliding across the sky from east to west. After falling asleep, they are greatly relieved when they awake to see that the sun is finally setting.

How Gaja and Garud come to realize how foolish they have been makes for amusing and insightful reading. Preethi Saravanakumar’s Walking With the Sun is evocatively illustrated by Julia Duclos. Using the loving and respectful conversation between close friends as its mainstay, the work effectively portrays the nature of true friendship, being the sharing of experiences. Just as Gaja and Garud learn life’s lessons while accompanying each other along the path of life, we too can grow in knowledge and spirituality in close companionship with others. The text ranges from conversations between the two creatures to beautifully written descriptions of their surroundings. Despite their great physical differences (being an elephant and an eagle), they are nevertheless close allies. This is a lovingly composed work that is spiritually uplifting and supportive. It would make a welcome addition to any home.
