Ruthless gang bangers, drug deals gone bad and bloody shootouts -- that's what you can expect in Welcome to the Brier Patch by Darrell McMann. This true crime drama tells the story of the life of McMann, a rookie white boy cop with the Mobile Police Department assigned to Alabama's toughest black neighborhoods, Happy Hills and Toulminville. In 1991, the newly minted police officer has to deal with the emergence of something poisoning the lives of residents in his community. Under the leadership of Jerald Jamison, chief of police, community policing -- a proactive method intended to prevent crime -- is instituted. When McMann gains mastery of the streets and earns the respect of the people, he is promoted to field training officer. Life is pretty good. But his real struggle has only just begun. Why are the mayor, city attorney and other officials hellbent on covering up the truth about one of their own?

Although I was not impressed with the cover, I was totally engrossed in this real life cops and robbers drama. This fast paced page turner had interesting, diverse and colorful characters and genuine and comical dialogue. McMann is a talented first-time author who knows how to maximize plot, background and pivotal details to entrance his spellbound readers. Welcome to the Brier Patch is recommended for true-crime buffs and anyone who enjoys action-packed drama.
